It’s important to families staying healthy together, says Mandira Bedi

The marathon season begins with the hint of winter in Mumbai. They are held in various categories and all over Mumbai. Running is considered the best exercise and what can be better than parents getting an opportunity to do a 2k and 5k marathon with their kids. It’s the only-one-of-its-kind marathon in India and called the Duracell Durathon. Well known celebrity and fitness expert, Mandira Bedi will soon participate in the third edition of the Durathon being held at Jio Gardens, BKC in Mumbai on 25th November. She will run with her 7-year-old son, Vir.  Mandira speaks about the importance of including family in all aspects of our lives to be healthy and her passion for fitness as she & Vir prepare for the Durathon.

FTV: Tell us about your association with Duracell Durathon 2018?
Mandira: This will be the third time that I associate with the Durathon and it’s my second run for the Mumbai Durathon. I have also participated in the Delhi Duarthon last year. It is such a wonderful feeling, spending that one Sunday with my son and seeing so many families out and about, running, bonding and having a purpose, that is staying healthy together.

FTV: What is your opinion on the concept of Duracell Durathon?
Mandira: I think the initiative is brilliant. Normally running is a solo sport. It is something that you do alone. But the beautiful thing about the Durathon is that it invites families to be together, participate together, bond and enjoy a beautiful Sunday morning doing something that is a healthy pursuit. Come run with me by logging into

FTV: These days most kids lead a very sedentary lifestyle, what should parents do to make their kids more fit or active?
Mandira: That is indeed true that children are leading a very sedentary lifestyle. Little kids want to spend time watching television or they are addicted to video games. So, I think parents needs to insist that a little bit of playtime needs to happen outdoors. Kids can go to the park and run around. They need to enjoy childhood the way it was done before technology took over. Parents should make it a point that their children should spend a fair amount of time outdoors doing stuff that requires being active.

FTV: What is your fitness mantra?
Mandira: I really do enjoy exercising and working out, so I make it a point that in a week at least five to six days, six days if I am lucky, I do some sort of activity, be it going to the gym or going for a swim. When I am travelling, and I don’t want to waste time indoors, I make sure that I walk a lot. So, I make sure that I go walking to places I need to get to. And somehow, I find that when I travel, I am clocking close to 15,000 steps every day. The important thing is, five to six days a week it is important to be active. Also, it’s no rocket science when it comes to nutrition. I haven’t gone to a nutritionist in a long time. Eat healthy. You know what’s good and what’s bad for you. Stay away from the stuff that’s bad. Sugar is not good for you at all. I have to keep giving up sugar for periods of time because that’s my downfall. I stay away from potatoes. I stay away from any kind of carbs post my lunch. So, there are a few things that you can do to keep yourself fit. This is my fitness mantra. I exercise five to six days a week and I generally eat healthy. Of course, I do have my few binges now and then but I reign myself back in as soon as I can

FTV: How do you ensure that your family stays fit?
Mandira: I have plenty arguments with my husband over exercising and he barely does what he has to, maybe two-three days a week. But for my son, I make sure he does what he enjoys doing. He enjoys running so him and I go for runs. Short runs, not very long distance where I run slowly and he keeps the pace with me. He enjoys swimming too. One hour of swimming in the pool gets him super tired and gets him super hungry. He is a very active boy.

FTV: Which is your favourite form of exercise?
Mandira: I do a form of HIIT (high-intensity intermittent exercise) where I mix cardio and weights. I do that quite often enough. I also go for runs every now and then. The third thing I do is swimming. So, these are the three activities that I perform the most as far as my exercise is concerned.

FTV: Is there any particular activity that you and your family do together to keep fit?
Mandira: As I mentioned before, the only two activities my son and I do together to keep fit are running, slow jogging and swimming.

FTV: An increasing number of people are running to stay fit. What is your advice to runners?
Mandira: The advice I would give to runners is start slow. Start with a smaller goal in mind and keep building that up. I remember the time I was pregnant. After I delivered, I wanted to start running again but there was a lot of weight on me and there was a lot of pressure on my knees when I ran. So, I started running with five minutes, built that up to seven and built it up to ten. So, start slow and start with smaller goals and keep building on those goals. Over time you’ll find yourself getting better.

The Duracell Durathon 2018 will take place at Jio Gardens, BKC, Mumbai on 25th November 2018. For registrations, please log on to:

Kerala Floods - The Human Story : A documentary celebrating Kerala’s Spirit of Survival

The one-hour special documentary Kerala Floods – The Human Story on Discovery Channel is a poignant take on the indomitable spirit of Kerala who instead of losing hope, are steadily working towards rebuilding their beloved state. The documentary is a celebration of the spirit of survival in the face of disaster; viewers will get to witness incredible stories of people coming together to help those in need – from fishermen turned rescue operators to the defence forces who provided aid, from actors who worked alongside NGO workers to get supplies to those in need to young entrepreneurs who devised ways to connect people at a time when the apocalyptic rain fury just refused to die. The documentary also features the story of Sajitha Jabil who was just three days away from her due date, her labour pains had intensified, and water levels were still rising. She was airlifted in one of the most dramatic rescues of Indian Navy’s Operation Madad. By the afternoon, baby Subhan was in her arms unaware of the many storms his mother braved to bring him into this world. This one-hour special documentary will be broadcast on Monday, November 12, 2018 at 9 PM, only on Discovery Channel.

It all began on Independence Day this year, when Kerala started experiencing an extremely heavy downpour. Little did the inhabitants of the state know that soon they were going to witness the worst deluge Kerala had seen in almost a century. In over eleven straight days of intense rainfall nearly 25 trillion litres of water fell on Kerala---a state with one of the highest density of population, 44 rivers and 61 dams. Water is a lifeline, defining not just Kerala’s geography but its history and economics as well. The watery abundance gives it life and sustenance.  The biggest flood in almost a century devastated most of the state. God’s own country will need to rebuild 218 bridges, nearly 35,000 kilometres of local roads, an estimated 174,000 houses. Agriculture crops in over 46,000 hectares was destroyed. The loss because of the floods has been estimated at INR 40,000 crores.

Highlighting the importance of this documentary, Zulfia Waris, Vice-President & Head, Premium & Digital Networks, Discovery Communications India, said, “What Kerala witnessed this year is a disaster of unimaginable magnitude. But like any news cycle, there’s always something else that takes precedence and yesterday’s headlines lay forgotten. The idea of presenting the documentary, 'Kerala Floods – The Human Story', is to draw attention to the hundreds of people who are working tirelessly to rebuild Kerala. Through stories about surprising strength of character in times of disaster and hope in the face of abject loss, ‘Kerala Floods’ aims to tell the story of a Kerala that refuses to be defined by devastation. Everyone saw the destruction of Kerala, it is now time they get to see the efforts that are being made to rebuild it, one brick at a time.”

Kerala Floods, which will be showcased on Discovery Channel on Monday 12th November 2018 at 9:00 pm will take viewers through inspiring stories of people of Kerala who refuse to lose hope and are working tirelessly to piece back everything that was lost.

Thugs of Hindostan - a saga where the audiences are conned

To write a review for the most awaited Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan starrer “Thugs of Hindostan” that has finally hit the screens, is quite a task actually. So let me start with a simple dialogue of Firangi Mallah (Aamir Khan) “Dhokha swabhav hai mera (To con is my nature).” Yes, this is what the movie is all about. The audience were conned to buy tickets at the 7000 screens worldwide, including 5,000 in India and 2,000 overseas, the widest for any Hindi film. As is the nature of the audiences during any festival time, they book tickets in advance leaving little or no time to even read the reviews or gauge audience reaction. While the distributors and the makers make their way to the bank happy and smiling, it leaves the audience fuming as the film didn’t live up to the hype.

Thugs of Hindostan that was released in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu with 3D and IMAX formats, is India’s answer to the desi “Pirates of the Caribbean”. Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, the film is anything but a stunner. The film’s primary plot revolves around a band of thugs led by Amitabh’s character Khudabaksh whose motive is to gain freedom for India from the British Raj. Add to it Firangi Mallah (Aamir Khan) with Kohl-laden eyes, a nose pin, trickster attitude, and who won't mind betraying for survival. Lace it up with a gyrating Suraiyya aka Katrina Kaif who has nothing to add to the film and the script and a royal heiress Zafira  (Fatima Sana Shaikh) who just gives plain blank expressions.

Essentially, Thugs Of Hindostan fails to deliver and satiate the audiences. Though the first half of the film has mixed proportions of drama, action and humour with visual spectacle playing to the gallery; it fails to hold the audience attention.  Plot-wise, the film keeps on dragging and its 2 hours 44 minutes of running time could have been well edited. There are moments in the film but nothing spectacular or overwhelming. And the songs of the film are forgettable, to say the least. In short, aKhudabaksh aka Amitabh Bachchan delivers a dialogue, “Ab iske pariwar ki zimmedari bhi hamari hai,” if only the producers and the studios could take the onus to return the money to the audiences who felt cheated at the end of the film.

A celebration of stunning colors and lights

Considered as the most considerable and auspicious Hindus festival of India, Diwali is the time to light up everywhere – not only the homes but even hearts. Celebrated by one and all and across numerous faiths throughout the Globe with unparalleled pomp and show, this wonderful-festival is the period where all illuminate their homes with hundreds of beautiful lights like earthen diyas and the skies with marvelous burning crackers. We all have our moments. Some become those we treasure. This is also the time to warm up hearts and gladden spirits as well as Diwali provides us an opportunity to celebrate the particular bonding of our lifestyle and strengthen relationships.

In this fast shrinking world, reaching out on Diwali to your loved ones who are away from you is tailor made. And warm Diwali wishes in any language explain the language of soul. So here’s our tinsel town expressing their heart and extending warm wishes to all.

Rishi Bhutani
Quoting Oscar Wilde, “Everything desirable is immoral, illegal or fattening…” For Diwali I sought everything desirable. That sums up my Diwali mood. But I also know, post Diwali I will be back once again on my track. Every year for Diwali I make sure I perform pooja with my family and I don't allow non-vegetarian food in my house. Playing cards and drinking are also not for me. Among the Do’s-I definitely spend time home and with close friends. Don’t want to be preachy, but yes, reach out to those who are less fortunate and spend your happiness and your time with them. And here’s wishing all a very Happy Diwali.

Mumtaz Khan
What Eid is to my Hindu friends, Diwali is same to me. We designers are too busy decorating models, actors and clients bodies, but I also do find time to share my joy, happiness and good fortune with the less fortunate ones. It is no different this year.  The one thing I don't do is noisy pollution-inflicting crackers. I never burn any firecrackers of any kind and I would appeal to all to reduce burning crackers.

Abhilasha Gaira
Diwali is the festival of happiness and we should spread this happiness to everyone. In my childhood days, during every Diwali we used to celebrate it with fire crackers but now we realize, it creates pollution and problems. So this Diwali, I would just make a good rangoli, meet my friends and relatives and organise a Diwali party. I think we should enjoy our festivals to the utmost. Also, we being in an industry where we hardly get time to catch on with each other, this is the best opportunity and season to renew old ties. I also take this opportunity to wish everyone “A Very Happy Diwali and wish you all the best.”

Ajay Mahendru
We decorate the house, prepare traditional mithais, and wear new clothes and of course gorge on sweets! Some traditions refuse to die. For me Diwali is also a time when earthen diyas are lit and you spread the message of love and peace. I love doing that. The one thing that I completely avoid for Diwali is noise pollution. I don't burst crackers for Diwali and definitely discourage family and friends from doing the same. So Friends, go out, chill, do masti but avoid burning crackers. Instead light up someone else’s life and you will feel happy for the same.

Amrita Dutta Tarphe
Yes, even after I shifted to the US of America, Diwali is most sacrosanct for me. The 'must haves' for the festive season are traditional sweets, simple rangoli and decorating the house with lights and diyas. When it comes to my wardrobe, it is ethnic ensembles all the way through; some stoles to dress up simple kurtas, corset tops which accentuate the ensembles, coupled with some nice bangles, earrings, nicely painted toes to keep up with all the dressing and maybe some anklets. Gifting is high on my list for the festive season, but to be honest, my family is back home in India and I’m coming over to meet them soon. So gifting for them can wait till then. And my wish list for the season would be - to receive loads of gifts in form of blessings and good wishes.

Vikas Singh Khokher
Once in a while it’s important to take a break from whatever you are doing and making the most of life. This Diwali spread happiness and joy all around by being happy! A happy soul can enlighten hundreds of other souls. Say no to fire crackers, Mother Nature needs you! Wishing all a very Happy Diwali.

Sandesh Gour
Last year I could not be with my family on Diwali as I was busy shooting for my Marathi Film "Jhing Premachi" in Agra, so this time I have made sure that I spend time with them and celebrating Diwali with my family in Nagpur. We celebrate Diwali by lighting lamps n diyas, mom cooks sweet and delicious food for us and in the evening it’s compulsory to do puja of Maa Laxmi, Ganeshji and Saraswati devi. Having said this, I celebrate it as an eco-friendly Diwali. So no crackers no pollution. On the contrary, I used that money to distribute sweets to the poor and old people and the needy ones. On this occasion of Diwali, I would like to say make others happy and you will find it in abundance in return. As it is a festival of lights, I would say “Light up someone’s life. Add light in their life.” And for my friends, well-wishers and fans, here’s wishing you a very Happy Diwali and a Prosperous New Year. Have an awesome and rocking year ahead.

Yes, Diwali is a time when you refurbish your houses, go shopping for new things, and decorate the house with torans, lamps and lights. We all have our moments. Some become those we treasure. Make this Diwali a treasured moment for you and others. Have a Happy Diwali.

#GiftOfLight brightens life of tribals

Diwali, the festival of lights was celebrated by Viviana Mall in a special way. This year, more than 100 homes in tribal villages of Paradhwadi and Mohwadi were benefited by their campaign, #GiftOfLight. As a part of the campaign, Viviana Mall distributed solar lamps, bringing smiles, cheers and lights in the lives of the villagers.
The villages situated in Murbad, approximately 90 km away from Mumbai face perennial electricity troubles at times. With irregular electricity supply, lack of skilled wireman and unfavourable climatic conditions the villagers live in darkness for days. Taking cognizance of the situation at the village, Viviana Mall initiated its #GiftOfLight campaign and distributed the solar-lamps that are capable of providing light for more than 20 hours when fully charged.
On the occasion, Ms Rima Pradhan, Sr VP Marketing, Viviana Mall said, “At Viviana, we believe our responsibility does not cease at just providing superior quality shopping experiences, it extends to contributing towards the society in a meaningful way. It is our constant endeavour to develop innovative solutions that help us drive environmental conservation. We persistently work on various causes to draw attention to the hardships faced by people and #GiftOfLight is our effort to bring joy and light to the people of Paradhwadi and Mohwadi, and make this festive season special for them. "
#GiftOfLight campaign was well appreciated by the villagers. The village Sarpanch specially thanked Viviana mall for their support and aid the villagers in leading a safe and better life.
Viviana Mall has always been at the forefront when it comes to giving it back to the community. Earlier this year, Viviana mall won a gold award at the ISCS Asia-Pacific Shopping Centre Award for their #Stopacidsale campaign.

Sushmita Mukherjee to play a sassy life coach in her debut web series, ‘Imperfect’

All of us have that one special person who is like a guardian angel helping us sail through in our life. Sushmita Mukherjee, the talented actor known for her versatile roles, forays into the world of web series with role of a life coach in The Zoom Studios recently released show ‘Imperfect’.

Sushmita, known for her role as Kitty from the famous 80’s detective show Karamchand has been entertaining audiences ever since. The actor will be seen as Simarjeet Sabharwal a.k.a. Simmy, a life coach to Isha Sanghvi, the lead protagonist of the show. The 55-year-old Simmy is playful, sassy, bossy and mischievous. She helps Isha rediscover herself and love herself the way she is.

Having been a well-known dancer who performed on some hit item numbers in films and danced her way into the audience’s hearts and enjoyed considerable fame, Simmy is not your stereotype typical Punjabi character. Though Simmy is glamorous, regal in her appearance and demeanour, she’s also a brazen freeloader. With a childlike curiosity and excitement, Simmy finds creative and unexpected ways to teach valuable philosophical lessons to Isha.

Talking about her role, Sushmita Mukherjee said, “I am very excited about my role in The Zoom Studios show 'Imperfect', as this is my first show for a digital medium. The shows made for digital platforms are finite and well scripted. I wanted to be part of such a series as it is relevant in today's time and a sought-after medium. It also gives an actor the scope to play unconventional roles. The character I play is very different from the other roles I have portrayed on screen. I play the character of Simmy, a sassy and bossy woman, who has her own unique ways to teach Isha, the show protagonist, some life lessons and help her embrace her imperfections”.

‘Imperfect’, the romantic comedy unfolds the journey of 27-year-old girl Isha Sanghvi, who in her relentless pursuit of perfection faces a whirlwind of uncertainties that life throws her way and rediscovers herself when her fairy tale world gets shattered.

Having premiered last night, Imperfect, presented by Myntra, skin care partner Dr. Tvacha, lifestyle partner Philips Garment Steamer and Associate Partner GoPro, airs every Thursday, at 8:00 pm on The Zoom Studios YouTube Channel and zoOm styled by Myntra

Martin Garrix teams up with American viral subway singer MIKE YUNG for anthemic new single Dreamer

After stunning the world with his last massive release ‘Ocean’ with Khalid, the world’s #1 DJ Martin Garrix continues his blistering run of form with a new track that’s destined for big things in the pop charts. Keen as ever to show the different sides of this musical personality, Dreamer is an anthemic single that adds to Garrix’ broad spectrum of collaborations.

Dreamer is a collaboration with MIKE YUNG — a former soul singer with an incredible story that’s both heart breaking and ultimately triumphant. It’s YUNG’s first ever collaboration with a big established artist like Garrix. Signed in the 1980s to T.Electric alongside all-time legends like Etta James and Luther Vandross, he later fell on hard times, living on the street in New York, attacked by gangs and stabbed nine times. He spent 38 years busking on the subway to support his family in the projects in Brooklyn before appearing on the hugely popular TV show America’s Got Talent, where he made it to the semi-finals.

The song embodies the uplifting feel that characterises his return to the spotlight, filled with hope and empowerment and positivity, with his soulful delivery searing over a euphoric Garrix pop production. Gospel style choir harmonies lift the track towards the end, with a powerful video showing YUNG singing the track in his old stomping ground of the New York subway. The video continues his journey through his Brooklyn projects and through to Amsterdam where he records the track alongside an ecstatic Garrix in the studio.

For Garrix to team up with one of the last remaining singers of the soul era is an unexpected and beautiful twist in his ever-impressive career. It just goes to show, you can never predict what he’ll do next.
