Will AKFPL & TUMBHI's “Shorts” be able to cut an image with the audiences?

A unique partnership between India’s leading production house, AKFPL, Tumbhi and India’s largest multiplex chain, PVR Cinemas, Shorts is produced by Anurag Kashyap and Guneet Monga, who are forerunners in this changing scenario in Indian film industry. This is in a way introducing accolade winning Short Films in a feature format to the Indian theatres bringing together critically acclaimed actors such as Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Qureshi, Richa Chadda, Vineet Singh, Shweta Tripathi among others. The 5 films include Sujata, Epilogue, Audacity, Mehfuz and Shor.

SUJATA by Shlok Sharma has Huma Qureshi, Shweta Tripathi, Satya Anand & Aditya Kumar in pivotal roles. Sujata is a riveting tale of a young girl, who is struggling to come out of the clutches of her tormenting cousin brother. At a very young age, she is forced to live with her cousin and his family. Herein, begins a life of incessant harassment by her cousin brother. Even as an adult she lives in the shadow of fear. For years, she changes addresses and identities in the hope of finding freedom; but each time he hunts her down. Neither the police, nor the NGOs are able to help her. Pushed to a corner, she decides to take the extreme step.

EPILOGUE by Siddharth Gupt has the talented Richa Chaddha pitted against Arjun Shrivastav. It’s a story of a relationship that has already fallen apart and is just about to snap. It describes the love and intimacy, the entangling of two lives and the completely symbiotic nature of a couple. It also reflects the possessiveness, the control isolation, depression and desperation that a relationship can lead to, representing a cycle that needs to be broken in order to keep sane.
AUDACITY by Anirban Roy has Preeti Singh, Sankar Debnath and Kanchan Mullick. A thirteen-year-old girl has her first real confrontation with authority when her father forbids her to play the American dance music she loves. When she decides to take revenge, the situation escalates to become a neighbourhood scandal. A dark comedy about parental authority, teenage rebellion, curry, whiskey, and house music.

MEHFUZ by Rohit Pandey has Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Aditi Khanna in an ambiguous space and time. The city has turned mad, as violence has taken its toll. But, far away in the sounds of silence at the border of the town, a man takes care of all the death around. He drags away this usual routine with every passing night. One night, he notices a strange woman wandering on empty streets. As her behavior changes, so does his journey.

SHOR by Neeraj Ghaywan has Vineet Singh and Ratnabali Bhattacharjee as Lallan and Meena, a couple from Banaras, who are consumed by their pursuit to survive in the city of  Mumbai. Meena takes up a job in a sewing factory. One day over a phone call, they find each other while embracing death, divorce and redemption. It takes the darkest hour of our life, the fear of death, to regain our consciousness back in to life.  To find the beauty that is lost in our relentless angst towards an unyielding life.

Though the format has been seen quite often in recent times, what needs to be seen is how the audience will be accepting it. Maybe after Bombay Talkies, this might also have a few takers given a talented and known starcast including Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Qureshi and Richa Chadda. But without known faces will the shorts be able to pull in the audience is one big question. And not all experiments are really gonna work just because they come from the Anurag Kashyap stable. Had that been the case, his “The Last Act” wouldn’t have had done the vanishing act. Only time will tell in this case too.

New face of the 15th Edition of the Mumbai Film Festival unveiled

The 15th edition of the Mumbai Film Festival; the premier film festival of the country organized by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI), will sport a new look. Just as the ever evolving art and industry of cinema, Mumbai’s most eagerly awaited cultural event has grown in both size and power over the years. To represent this fact and the strong association with the most important centre of the Indian film industry, the festival has created a new visual identity.

The icon is a contemporary and edgy interpretation of the city’s iconic monument, the Gateway of India and is a carefully crafted homage to Mumbai’s art deco era of talkies. The new identity is fluid with a dazzling array of colours, each one representing a particular category at the festival while at the same time reflecting the diverse cultural mosaic of the financial capital of India. The logo by which the festival will be known is a rendition of the coveted Golden Gateway Award, the premier award recognizing the best film at the festival, to give it a familiar albeit modern feel.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Shyam Benegal, Filmmaker and Chairman of MAMI, said, “This year we have an exciting new logo that incorporates both the city of Mumbai and the iconic gateway of India."

Commenting on the new logo, Festival Director Mr. Srinivasan Narayanan said, “The festival has evolved into one of the most important film festivals in this part of the world, showcasing the best cinema from all over the globe. The new logo stands for the dynamic and fluid integration of the iconic with progress and evolution which I cannot wait to share with the world.”

The 15th Mumbai Film Festival will take place from the 17th – 24, October 2013.

An Oscar and an entry at Cannes is Nihal's dream

Basically into acting, 26 year old Nihal Kiran Dalwai has assisted quite a few directors in short and feature films. He is now set to directing and act in a short film called "Gangster Pinto". Recently he has also acted in a short film called "Friday the 6th" as the lead, directed by Shubh Malhotra.

About Nihal Kiran Dalwai
He just loves world cinema and Bollywood. He has done plays with theatre groups such as Shabd and Yatri. He has done acting workshops with many great actors. He loves reading books and movies excite him. He is currently working on short film called "Gangster Pinto", which is targeted at international film festivals. He is acting, writing and directing this short film. He has also signed a movie called "Call Back" as a lead actor, where he is playing the role of a serial killer. The film which is in Hindi and Telugu language is quite different from run of the mill movies. At the same time, he is working on another Bollywood movie directed by a independent film maker. This movie is inspired by Tamil super hit movie "Pizza". He tells he is always excited about doing good movies with mind blowing scripts and intelligent directors. Anyways this guy is in no hurry. He knows his moves well and has a sharp sense of choosing good scripts.

How did he land the role in Friday the 6th
He met Shubh Malhotra of Chai Koffi Films while doing a course on writing and direction. Eventually they got along well. Shubh wanted to make a short movie and they used to interact a lot. Also, he was helping her in the production as well. As she knew he was an actor too, so she asked him to do the lead as well. “Right since my childhood Bollywood has fascinated me. Now I like world cinema too. Short films are made all over the world in almost all countries. Even the production cost is less and you can yet experiment with a variety of subjects. This is the one nice way how I can reach the people all over world. Many short films also reach the Oscars and Cannes. Someday I want to be there in Cannes and want to get an Oscar for my short movie,” Says Nihal.

What made him turn Director for Gangster Pinto
He kept going to different film festivals and that gave him a kick.  It was here that he came across short films that were crisp, well done and touching a variety of subjects, emotions and even the dark alleys. It was at such fests when he saw the best unfold without having to go through the rigmarole of songs and dance and found his true calling. “It was at these film festivals that I fell in love with short films. Now, I just love short films and given the variety, they can be quick and interesting too. After doing a course in direction and script writing, it was but natural to drift towards film making. I am a dreamer and always think of imaginary things. This makes me a good storyteller too. At the same time I’m an actor as well. Combining all together, I can only say that this is my all time passion,” adds Nihal.

He says "Short Films" are a big market these days
“Short films have a great future in India. Yes, definitely they have a great potential in India but is still to be untapped. I feel in India this market has not been explored so much. Because Indians know only the big film format - be it Bollywood, Tollywood, Kollywood and other regional industry films. Normal people are not even aware what a short movie is. There are some groups like Shamiana, who are promoting short movies, which is a great step towards this. Even many big directors in Bollywood like Anurag Kashyap, Bejoy Nambiar, Anurag Basu, Dibakar Bannerji, Zoya Akhtar etc have done short movies and many are still making. Slowly I feel it will come into the main stream, but it might take time,” concluded Nihal.

Here’s Films & TV World wishing “Best of Luck” to this upcoming actor.

Is today’s genX driving in the wrong lane? Lost in love - Jiah Khan..

The sensitivity and love doesn't exist now in most people amongst today’s genX especially... Everything is limited to "fun" and "time pass"... Is today’s genX driving in the wrong lane? This is one major question that keeps arising in the minds as we reproduce the text from actress Jiah Khan's suicide letter allegedly addressed to Suraj Pancholi. This letter was shared to the media by Jiah's mother through their publicists.... Excerpts..

"I don't know how to say this to you but I might as well now as I have nothing to lose. I've already lost everything. If you're reading this I might have already left or about to leave. I am broken inside. You may not have known this but you affected me deeply to a point where I lost myself in loving you. Yet you tortured me everyday. These days I see no light I wake up not wanting to wake up. There was a time I saw my life with you, a future with you. But you shattered my dreams. I feel dead inside. I've never given so much of myself to someone or cared so much. You returned my love with cheating and lies. It didn't matter how many gifts I gave you or how beautiful I looked for you. I was scared of getting pregnant but I gave myself completely the pain you have caused me everyday has destroyed every bit of me, destroyed my soul. I can't eat or sleep or think or function. I am running away from everything. The career is not even worth it anymore.

When I first met you I was driven, ambitious and disciplined. Then I fell for you, a love I thought would bring out the best in me. I don't know why destiny brought us together. After all the pain, the rape, the abuse, the torture I have seen previously I didn't deserve this. I didn't see any love or commitment from you. I just became increasingly scared that you would hurt me mentally or physically. Your life was about partying and women. Mine was you and my work. If I stay here I will crave you and miss you. So I am kissing my 10-year career and dreams goodbye. I never told you but I received a message about you. About you cheating on me. I chose to ignore it, decided to trust you. You embarrassed me. I never went out, I never went with anyone else. I am a loyal person. I never met anyone with Karthik. I just wanted you to feel how you make me feel constantly. No other woman will give you as much as I did or love you as much as I did. I can write that in my blood. Things were looking up for me here, but is it worth it when you constantly feel the pain of heartbreak when the person you love wants to abuse you or threatens to hit you or cheats on you telling other girls they are beautiful or throws you out of their house when you have no where to go and you've come to them out of love or when they lie to your face or they make you chase after them in their car. Or disrespects their family. You never even met my sister. I bought your sister presents. You tore my soul. I have no reason to breathe anymore. All I wanted was love. I did everything for you. I was working for us. But you were never my partner. My future is destroyed my happiness snatched away from me. I always wished the best for you, was ready to invest what little money I had in your betterment. You never appreciated my love, Kicked me in the face. I have no confidence or self esteem left, whatever talent whatever ambition you took it all away. You destroyed my life. It hurt me so much that I waited for you for ten days and you didn't bother buying me something.

The Goa trip was my birthday present but even after you cheated I still spent on you. I aborted our baby when it hurt me deeply. You destroyed my Christmas and my birthday dinner when I came back. When I tried my hardest to make your birthday special. You chose to be away from me on Valentines Day. You promised me once we made it to one year we would get engaged. All you want in life is partying, your women and your selfish motives. All I wanted was you and my happiness you took both away from me. I spent money on you selflessly you would throw in my face. When I would cry for you. I have nothing left in this world to live for after this. I wish you had loved me like I loved you. I dreamt of our future. I dreamt of our success. I leave this place with nothing but broken dreams and empty promises. All I want now is to go to sleep and never wake up again. I am nothing. I had everything. I felt so alone even while with you. You made me feel alone and vulnerable. I am so much more than this."

Bollywood biggies including Naseeruddin Shah, Zeenat Aman, Nawazuddin Siddique and Manjot Singh in short films @ LISFF 2013

Short films these days have been very much in the media with the release of Bombay Talkies that clubbed 4 short films together and released it as a feature film. This initiative got a good thumb up from the audiences and the critics alike. Close on the heels comes another news that Deepika Padukone and Arjun Kapoor will soon be seen in a Konkani-English short film, directed by Homi Adajania and produced by Saif Ali Khan’s Illuminati Films. With main stream Bollywood actors showing a keenness to do short films, it’s a clear indication that short films are soon going to be the next big thing in recent times.

With a theme line Lets go BIG with shorts, LISFF is also ‘going and growing’ a bit big with short films from around the globe. It has not only received globally awarded films, but also has received a prestigious entry of the Oscar award winning film ‘Curfew’ by Shawn Christensen. To add to its status, LISFF has also received Cannes entry films including ‘The Plan’ by Vivek Sharma, ‘Ria’ by Abhishek Talukdar and ‘Mombatti’ by Puneet Prakash and National Award winner “Timbaktu” that tops the list.
However, the icing on the cake are short films from India that have popular Bollywood actors including Naseeruddin Shah, Nawazuddin Siddique, Zeenat Aman, Manjot Singh and the like in short films. While versatile actor Naseeruddin Shah will be seen in “Goonj - the empty call” a documentary by Adhiraj Bose on Charas cultivation in Himachal Pradesh, Nawazuddin Siddique will be seen in Sriram Dalton’s short fiction “OP stop smelling your socks.” While Bollywood’s diva Zeenat Aman will be seen in a Male Rape drama “Breaking the Silence” by Sanghamitra Chaudhuri, Manjot Singh who is coming the soon to be released ‘Fukrey’ will be seen in Gagan Puri’s “The Dream”. A few of the telly stars are also to be seen in some thought provoking films.
