RRR sequel confirmed with Ram Charan and Jr NTR but Rajamouli may not direct

Vijayendra Prasad, SS Rajamouli's father and screenwriter of the Oscar winner period epic RRR, has confirmed that a sequel is in the pipeline. However, this news is nothing new as Rajamouli had already confirmed the sequel of his Telugu action-drama at the 80th Golden Globes. The shocking news is that SS Rajamouli may not direct the sequel. This is confirmed by Vijayendra Prasad who also confirmed that the sequel may not continue with the same storyline. It is likely to be based on another chapter from the Telugu states of the pre-Independence era with the same original stars Ram Charan and Jr NTR to recreate the magic of the first part.

While it may set one wondering why Rajamouli is not keen to direct the RRR sequel, the actual reason restricting the filmmaker may be his lack of time as he is committed to other projects. It seems, Rajamouli will be tied up with his new project tentatively titled SSMB 29, that will see Mahesh Babu in an Indiana Jones-like adventure film. Once that finishes, he is likely to then direct his interpretation of the Mahabharata, that will roll out in a 10-part franchise. This may, then, restrict the filmmaker from returning to direct the sequel of RRR. This may however, come as a shocker to Rajamouli’s fans as he is considered a maverick filmmaker with back-to-back hits with the Baahubali franchise and RRR. However, the sequel does hold promise as Vijayendra also hinted at the possibility that Rajamouli may remain associated with the project as someone “under his supervision” would helm the film, in case he chooses not to direct.

One of the most expensive Indian films to date, RRR is a Telugu film that was dubbed in Hindi, Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam among Indian languages. It also starred Bollywood superstars Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn. The film's song Naatu Naatu, composed by MM Keeravani, became a global rage as the dance number fetched India its maiden Golden Globe and Academy Award in the Best Original Song category.
